Research abstract

Reveam’s proposal addresses Subtopic 2, the goal of which is to conduct system studies initially focused on two use cases: Use Case 1 - a single 10 kW system for deployed or austere environments and Use Case 2 -multiple distributed 10 kW systems for point of packaging treatment. On January 27, 2022, Reveam became the first company in the last 10-years to successfully navigate the arduous regulatory process required to commercially operate an accelerator-based irradiation facility in the United States, when its inaugural commercial Electronic Cold-Pasteurization (ECP™) food irradiation facility was certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Services (APHIS). This experience makes Reveam exceptionally and uniquely qualified to conduct all Subtopic 2 requirements.  More specifically, based upon Reveam’s current and ongoing experience and relationships with applicable regulatory authorities including USDA, APHIS, EPA, NRC & DOE we are up-to-date on, well versed in and fully understanding of methods, rules, requirements, guidance and best practices associated with certifying electron accelerator-based food irradiation facilities.Reveam, Inc. will prime this opportunity and has assembled a world-class team to perform Subtopic 2 objectives.  Our teaming partners, Sem-Sol, Georgia Tech and VJ Technologies each brings the team complimentary capabilities. The Reveam team will examine operation of the systems developed in Subtopic 1 in deployed or austere environments and confirm its capability to effectively and efficiently feed 300 troops from mobilized trailers or 800 troops from containerized kitchens.  The Reveam team will also examine using accelerator(s) developed in Subtopic 1 in a distributed architecture.  Detailed technical analysis, economic analysis, and commercialization plans will be performed with the goal of minimizing overall system costs including bit not limited to i) detailed modeling and analysis of various objects and package configurations, ii) Monte Carlo analysis to design and study radiation shielding configurations and confirm exposure rates are within regulatory limits, iii) simulation analyses to determine the site/facility performance, optimal throughput, process assets and labor requirements and performance targets. Finally, Reveam will develop and demonstrate a Proof-of Concept pilot for both of use cases describe in the SaFE solicitation at one of its teaming partner’s high-energy test cells.  By offering solutions that are both affordable and sustainable, Reveam and its partners will be able to address a wide range of markets, particularly in emerging economies, small producers, and those struggling with food waste and loss problems – including retail and food service providers.
