Research abstract

In the pursuit of advancing military capabilities to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex global security environment, the strategic deployment of advanced wargaming platforms emerges as a pivotal innovation. This initiative proposes leveraging the Spring-Engine, known for its focus on Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games such as Beyond All Reason (BAR), as the foundational technology for a wargaming platform aimed at addressing a critical inquiry posed by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) initiative: the potential for the transferability of intuitions, tactics, and operational strategies cultivated within virtual environments to real-world applications. Ā Our approach advocates for the development of a "wargaming cloud" that engages allied warfighters in immersive, analytically rich joint operation wargames, fostering the crowdsourcing of groundbreaking operational strategies from the Open-Source RTS gaming community.ĀWe seek to create a framework for easily reading game replays across a variety of games in a general manner which can be used in modern AI frameworks such as PyMARL and RLlib. By capitalizing on the Spring-Engine's robust support for several Massive Scale RTS gamesŚa genre inherently reflective of the cognitive and strategic intricacies of military operationsŚthis effort seeks to generate a comprehensive dataset from gameplay spanning several RTS games. This dataset will be a key resource for both conventional and AI-driven analytical techniques, aimed at extracting meaningful insights and facilitating AI-informed decision-making.Ā
