Research abstract

Currently probes within the Aerodynamic and Propulsion Test Unit (APTU) are limited to the assessment of total pressure and temperature with no direct measurement of local static pressure or Mach number. A direct measurement of both static pressure or Mach number is possible within APTU using the proven multi-hole probe approach proposed here.Ā Phase I will focus on: Consulting with AEDC personnel to define how to implement this approach within the existing APTU flow-field rakes to provide direct measurement of Mach number and static pressure while augmenting measurement of total pressure and temperature; Conceptually refining and fabricating a prototype full scale probe configuration suitable for operation throughout the APTU flow envelope; Evaluation of this prototype probe configuration throughout the APTU operating envelope within an operational test infrastructure. Estimating the overall uncertainty of Phase I test results relative to operation on an APTU flow rake; Minimizing the need for operational assumptions through independent validation with high fidelity simulation results. Development of a Phase II demonstration plan that permits the numerous design iterations necessary to assure robustness, accuracy and precision throughout the APTU test envelope. The result of Phase I will be demonstration of a prototype multi-hole probe capable of integration within an APTU free-jet exhaust rake followed by subsequent calibration of APTU flow-field conditions early into the Phase II effort.Ā
