Research abstract

The Kibeam Wand Reading System (KWRS) for children ages 3 to 8 will consist of hardware and software components. A handheld wand with an embedded camera will use natural language processing to scan and read a series of up to 100 popular children's paper books aloud with an AI engine that will scaffold literacy development through ongoing formative assessment, with activities and games augmenting the learning associated with the pictures and words in the books. A reporting dashboard will provide educators and parents results for child progress and will recommend customized books for individual students. The product will integrate Universal Design Principles to support children with diverse abilities through varied interaction modes?aural, oral, and kinesthetic?catering to different learning preferences and needs. For children with sight impairments, the wand will be compatible with braille books. The product intends to support literacy skills including print, letter name recognition and fluency, letter and sound correspondence, decoding, sight word recognition, vocabulary expansion, comprehension, and reading fluency. available
