Research abstract

Sodium laser guide stars bloom in size when broadcast to the upper atmosphere through strong turbulence.á Larger guide stars can cause the focused spot in the Shack-Hartmann sub-apertures to increase in size thereby decreasing the main system's ability to detect the atmospheric wavefront aberrations.á We propose here to manufacture an adaptive optics system for a sodium laser guide star based on our success in demonstrating these kinds of systems for laser weapons.á This system should significantly reduce the size of the guide star in the upper atmosphere even in stronger turbulence and enable the main system to operate more effectively.
