Research abstract

The pursuit of precision in manufacturing hard ceramic optical mirrors with high numerical aperture (NA) stands as a crucial imperative for advancing Navy strategies, facilitating vital applications in demanding maritime environments, such as high-resolution imaging and target acquisition. As the Navy embraces silicon carbide (SiC) and similar hard ceramics for their unmatched thermomechanical stability, innovative material and machining integrations become paramount. However, traditional manufacturing methods often fall short, resulting in subsurface damage and cost-prohibitive processes. Advanced Silicon Carbide Materials’ (ASCM’s) approach to pioneering advancements involves innovative materials and innovative material processing solutions. ASCM's groundbreaking Chemical Vapor Composite (CVC®) manufacturing method heralds a new era in hard ceramic production. This method, demonstrated with SiC and adaptable to other chemistries, produces stress-free, 100% dense CVC SiC®, unmatched in quality and capability. The isotropic nature of CVC SiC® enhances machinability, reducing the risk of subsurface damage and fracture during precision processes, ultimately yielding superior optical components. Micro-LAM's expertise in adapting machining parameters through an advanced laser-assisted Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) process and patented system builds upon prior collaborative work and represents a leap forward in precision machining, even for materials conventionally difficult to machine. Localized laser-assisted machining (LAM) ensures ductile cutting regime machining in SiC, enhancing material removal and surface quality. By selectively heating the material at the tool/workpiece interface, Micro-LAM's process achieves exceptional surface finishes, minimizing subsurface damage and post-processing requirements. This twofold approach synergizes advanced material synthesis with laser-assisted machining, optimizing SiC optics manufacturing. Through meticulous analysis of material properties and machining parameters, this initiative aims to achieve deterministic and cost-effective fabrication. Advanced analytical techniques, coupled with state-of-the-art metrology equipment, validate surface form accuracy, meeting the stringent requirements for high NA optics. The integration of SiC manufacturing, machining, and polishing capabilities positions ASCM as a single-source Navy supplier, bolstering the domestic supply chain. By optimizing production workflows, the goal is to deliver high-quality hard ceramic mirrors to the Navy efficiently and affordably.
