Research abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are ubiquitous today. IoT analytics shows 328.77 million terabytes of data are generated, copied, or consumed daily. In the U.S. alone, there are over 2,700 data centers. However, the types and capabilities of the devices sharing data vary widely, and the ability to test and secure these devices is essential and growing exponentially. The U.S. Government (USG) has a clear need to perform thorough, automated testing on IoT devices to ensure they are safe and secure, not only when they are in development but periodically as new vulnerabilities present themselves and the latest updates are created and deployed. Tangram Flex, Inc (Tangram) proposes a Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE) system that uses a test orchestration engine and a variety of focused test components to meet the needs of automated testing for a large number of IoT and even other software-based systems. In Phase I, Tangram successfully created and demonstrated the IoT testing framework. Phase II will focus on agile scalability and broad applicability. Bringing all IoT devices together enables the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to be the accelerator and incubator that aligns stakeholders to provide a holistic approach to securing all layers of an IoT system.
