Research abstract

Project Summary Redbud Labs is developing an automated microfluidic system for next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation, aiming to eliminate a persistent bottleneck in the sequencing workflow. The system improves speed, reliability, and throughput of sample prep, particularly for low-input and FFPE samples common in translational and clinical research. This innovation builds on Redbud’s core microfluidics technology and is supported by its active Phase II SBIR grant (2R44GM145194-02A1). To ensure successful market entry, Redbud seeks a TABA Administrative Supplement under PA-20-272 and NOSI NOT-OD-24-077. The company will engage i5 BioPartners, a commercialization firm with deep experience in life science tools and direct expertise in NGS workflows, to provide third-party assistance. The proposed project includes three high-impact activities: (1) structured voice-of-customer (VOC) interviews and market segmentation; (2) development of a strategic messaging and positioning framework; and (3) creation of commercialization collateral including a brochure, technical white paper, and website content. These activities fall within the NIH-defined categories of Market & Commercial Strategy and Go- to-Market Execution. The requested TABA funding of $48,000 will enable Redbud to refine product-market fit, strengthen its go-to-market approach, and support early adoption efforts— none of which are covered under the original Phase II award budget. All work will be conducted during the active grant period (Oct 1, 2025 – Mar 31, 2026).
