Research abstract

A critical step for any over-the-shore (OTS) refueling systems is to make an initial connection with beach teams with minimal risk to personnel. This connection is typically a small diameter dyneema line, often referred to as a messenger line. The messenger line is then used to setup a variety of OTS systems including, but not limited to, Distributed Littoral Operations Fuel Transfer System (DLOFTS), Joint logistics Over the Shore (JLOTS), Offshore Petroleum Distribution System (OPDS), Bulk Fuel Offshore Delivery System (BFOSDS), Span Wire Over the Shore System (SWOTS), and Submersible Petroleum Distribution System (SPDS).  These systems can be used to deliver fuel and other critical logistical equipment to shore. The Phase II work proposes to extend the Phase I work to create a remote operated messenger line delivery USV.  This USV will be a variant of the MAPC GARC product line.  The GARC will use a similar line deployment method to lay line out as the ship travels to shore. It will also utilize a built-in turning block to the GARC hull for establishing the OTS system.  Lastly, storage space at the bow of the ship will allow for the transportation of key equipment to shore. Within the Phase I and II efforts, concept, preliminary and critical design packages will be produced and a prototype will be developed before Phase II concludes. Crucial to any success of a SBIR technology is the ability to test frequently and demonstrate. MAPC will seek industry and government funded opportunities to test and demonstrate the developed watercraft and has contract vehicles in place to enable such work.  We believe that there are significant commercial markets for the high tow force unmanned vessel that can generate tow forces of up to 2,000 pounds at speeds of up to 8 knots.
