Research abstract

The detection of radionuclide aerosols is a critical indicator of a nuclear detonation. Existing radionuclide aerosol systems as part of the International Monitoring System operate near the noise floor of the gamma spectrometer measurement. Increasing the flow rate of radionuclide aerosol systems while keeping the collection efficiencies within the CTBT specification will allow for greater particle collection and increased sensitivity. We propose to develop an agglomeration system designed for small particles of interest and low particle densities that are often seen in urban and rural atmospheric conditions to improve the capture efficiency of these hard-to-collect particles. In Phase I, based on literature review and first principles, we will develop a detailed agglomeration model to study the unique case of fine particles and low particle density. Based on the modeling results, we will design a prototype system. In Phase II, we will build the prototype, including the high-pressure level acoustic horns and drivers, and test the capture efficiency of fine particles at high flow rates and low concentrations.
