Research abstract

Protective ensembles designed for hazardous materials response are integral in safeguarding personnel against exposure to harmful substances. The NFPA 1994 mandates Class 3 protection standards, necessitating stringent permeation resistance against hazardous agents like distilled mustard, Soman, and toxic industrial chemicals. Balancing this imperative, however, is the need for breathability and comfort alongside fire-resistant properties. Current protective garments, predominantly composed of impermeable but bulky materials like butyl rubber, lack breathability, causing discomfort and elevated thermal stress during prolonged use. Elastomers like fluoropolymers and co-polymers are associated with environmental concerns. In this study, we will leverage our expertise in breathable fabric development to create fluorine-free chemical protective textiles that meet Class 3 NFPA standards. By focusing on novel compositions, our research aims to achieve a balance between chemical permeation resistance, breathability, and fire resistance. The resulting protective ensembles promise enhanced user comfort and safety, ensuring optimal performance in hazardous environments while mitigating environmental impacts associated with traditional materials
