Research abstract

For years IN Space has pursued the rapid development of rotating detonation rocket engines to determine if these combustion devices could achieve the efficiency, size, and stability benefits theorized and to close the technology gap with near-peer adversaries that have been advancing these combustion devices for decades. Recent progress by IN Space and others has demonstrated the potential of this new type of engine to produce high combustion efficiencies in chambers a fraction the length of traditional deflagration engines. Further, sufficient design information and data exist to be able to begin to close the design of the engines. Moving the technology towards evaluation through flight testing will focus development efforts on addressing the most critical design risks while validating operation and performance in a flight configuration.   The collaboration of IN Space, Ursa Major Technologies, and Stratolaunch brings together the knowledge, expertise, and hardware assets necessary to reach all objective level key performance parameters in integrated vehicle-level tests with a pump-fed rotating detonation rocket engine by the end of the Phase II. The Phase I effort supports this by aligning development requirements to DoD applications, assessing the feasibility of the detailed development plan, and retiring key engine and combustor risks.
