Research abstract

Systems & Processes Engineering Corporation (SPEC) is proposing to develop and demonstrate an intelligent satellite threat warning sensor based on our MicroEW electronics capabilities. Most of the new electronic warfare (EW) threats are multi-modal and multi-band, along with modulated, agile, and even cognitive waveforms. Digital search and acquisition radars present a detection problem, with their ability to switch modes and generate a wide variety of signals including nanosecond-to-millisecond pulses, modulated pulse signals, and dynamic (hopping, agile, and adaptive) signals. These threats can switch to an IR seeker for close-in sensing and tracking. To address these dynamic threat challenges, SPEC proposes an integrated RF and laser detection solution that uses space-hardened processors with intelligent AI in order to characterize, identify, and fuse all emissions according to their spatial, temporal, and spectral patterns. SPEC has a long history in laser detection and RF electronic surveillance, and has a line of wideband transceiver products covering the 20 MHz to 18 GHz spectrum. Our TRL-9 transceivers can monitor the RF spectrum, and can also generate and transmit a wide variety of agile and modulated signals. We also have a long history with LADARs and laser warning systems for all manner of pulsed and modulated laser threats. SPEC will be responsible for studying sensors and receiver architectures for the threat bands of interest. SPEC currently has the capability to generate multi-modal (laser and RF) and multi-band (S and X) threat signals, and can quickly learn patterns of signal emissions for training, testing, and laboratory demonstrations. SPECĺs novel ôdeep learningö AI techniques have been shown effective for identifying signal modulations, tracking agile pulse signals for low false alarm detections, and multi-modal sensor decision fusion.
