Research abstract

This proposal introduces the Onboard Sensing and Communication system for Bearing monitoring (OSC-B), a game-changing technology in response to the urgent critical need for early detection of axle bearing failure that frequently causes train derailments. Highlighted by the recent catastrophic derailment of a chemical train in Ohio, the inadequacy of intermittent wayside monitoring systems is evident. Building upon the integrated sensor and wireless communication platform's success in earlier phases, this SBIR Phase IIB project aims to deploy a wireless micro sensor network onto existing bearing boxes seamlessly. This sensor network provides continuous, comprehensive monitoring and offers early detection and real-time alerts for bearing damage, thereby not only preventing accidents but also enabling cost-effective remedies and proactive maintenance. The cutting-edge design of dual wireless communication modes ensures system robustness in delivering instant bearing failure alarms, independent of Internet availability. The proposed ambitious work plan includes sensor design and prototyping, wireless communication system development, and a one-month trial on in-service train to validate the system's performance under strenuous railroad conditions. With a commercialization strategy well defined in the proposal, OSC-B stands as a transformative innovation in railcar monitoring, promising to significantly enhance the railway transportation safety in the future.
