Research abstract

The Army defends US-based and forward operating base perimeters through a mix of fixed sensors and manual and time-consuming physical presence patrols. This low-tech, manual approach to threat detection and prevention creates inefficiencies and gaps that endanger Army bases and the Soldiers stationed there. Law enforcement and military police (MP) battalions deploy limited personnel to assess areas on routine patrols. Soldiers log incidents in written notebooks or localized incident tracking spreadsheets. Patrol routes are driven by past experience and recency biases, with no underpinning data to drive decision making nor a way to readily recognize trends. The hundreds of hours spent on repetitive routine patrols takes Soldiers away from other force protection activities that require human analysis and decision-making. This creates additional security risks because the threats that require human analysis do not receive appropriate attention. It also spreads battalions thin and creates predictable routes that adversaries can monitor and plan attacks around. The Army also misses enemy behavioral patterns hidden in data. Periodic breaches or surveillance may actually be coordinated adversary surveillance efforts. By not using the data before it and instead relying on traditional Āmanual methods, the Army exposes itself not only to inefficiencies but risks of attack.Ā To address this challenge, r4 Technologies proposes to modify and adapt its Dynamic Tours platform for Army perimeter security and threat detection use cases. ĀThe r4 Dynamic Tours solutions is a highly automated, rapidly deployable AI/ML software platform that utilizes a proprietary ōDigital Twinö capability to make predictions, recommendations, or optimizations for physical security patrols. The r4 Dynamic Tours platform easily connects to legacy systems and enables advanced AI/ML Āalgorithms to drive significant improvements in the speed, efficiency, and accuracy of how security elements deploy Soldiers to defend posts. At the heart of the Dynamic Tours platform is a unique ōDigital Twinö AI model that can be rapidly configured to represent one or multiple command domains to unify data, visualize situations in a common operating picture, generate predictions, and recommend optimal actions. Dynamic Tours is deployed in a secure Government Cloud environment for each customer. The system ingests Government data ōas is,ö eliminating the need for manual data cleansing and significantly increasing deployment speed. r4Æs library of proven AI/ML algorithms are configured and trained to support multiple use cases such as risk/propensity scoring, demand forecasting, event prediction, and optimization. AI/ML outputs are sent to existing Government systems (including SIPR environments), reducing the need for replacement of core systems, providing the benefits of modernization with less time and investment.Ā Ā
