Research abstract

Reaching a net-zero carbon economy requires storing billions of tonnes of captured CO2 in geologic for-mations. This scale of geologic CO2 storage (GCS) is thousands of new CO2 injection sites. The challenge is knowing where to locate these sites to reach energy transition goals. We developed new and game-changing science to rapidly and realistically screen for CO2 storage resources with the Sequestration of CO2 Tool (SCO2TPRO). SCO2TPRO is a coupled tool and database that can, for the first time and on the scale and accuracy demanded by the climate challenge, simultaneously estimate: (1) CO2 injection rates, (2) CO2 plume evolution, (3) storage capacity, and (4) end-to-end costs, across the entire country. We: 1) booked dozens of contracts for government, non-profit, and commercial sector clients; 2) developed new reservoir simulation data; 3) used this data to develop new Reduced Order Models (ROMs); 4) created new cost models; 5) re-developed the software as an object-oriented library; 6) built a first-of-a-kind na-tionwide geologic database; 7) added capability to estimate the capacity and cost of geothermal power plants; 8) investigated the techno-economics of CO2 injection; 8) published nine technical reports; and 9) presented at eleven conferences. We will: 1) continue improving our ROMs of saline storage; 2) construct new ROMs to represent advanced CO2 injection and storage operations, including in basalt formations, depleted oil and gas fields, and shale; 3) develop SCO2TPRO into a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product; 4) continue to improve and expand our geologic database for the US and expand it internationally; 5) add other geospatial data relevant to carbon management (e.g., Class VI wells); 6) develop new cost models of for non-saline ROMs and for CO2 storage operations outside the US; 7) continue to apply SCO2TPRO in novel ways and demonstrate it to potential investors. SCO2TPRO is an essential tool for many commercial applications, including market assessment, project fea-sibility, and project design and CO2 storage certification. Our 22 letters of support provided with this pro-posal represent the breadth of potential users and investors in SCO2TPRO across our eight market segments of CO2 storage developers, consultants, energy providers, governments, large landowners, NGOs, Tribal Nations, and universities. Together, our Phase II market assessment and Phase IIA letters of support indicate massive demand for SCO2TPRO, as well as substantial confidence that the project will be a success.
