Research abstract

Detect Inspect LWIR Lidar Seeker (DILLS) proposes to conduct a thorough exploration of the trade space for a combination of a passive LWIR and an active, possibly spectropolarimetric, LiDAR.  Our team has experience with the combination of passive survey sensors with active LiDAR using advanced scanning mechanisms, including one and two axis fast steering mirrors.  We will define the operational parameters for the components which compose a passively augmented LiDAR, including sensors, scanners, guidance navigation and control (GNC), algorithms, processing, and mechanical structure.  Using this parametrization, we will encode the problem in terms of a nonlinear optimization in order to find an optimal system design point, where the figure of merit is the probability of detection while keeping the false alarm rate below a threshold.  As a result of this optimization, we propose to create a design concept suitable for use in an experimental Phase II, showing how to use this system in outdoor tests. In particular, we will explore the use of one and two axis fast steering mirrors, also risley steering prisms, all with throws large enough to cover the field of regard.  We will explore the combination of these, where necessary, with fine steering mechanisms to provide agile scanning as well as backscanning against large motion. As part of the system engineering exploration, we propose to create a system simulation that will help to define the connection between the scan rates and detection capabilities of both sensors.  This simulation will provide the first version of the control mechanism for a potential Phase II prototype construction. We propose to conduct this study in the context of a missile seeker head, which will provide the constraints around this system engineering optimization.  This seeker target will provide guidance to the project engineering, but the prototype will be intended to validate the system model.
