Research abstract
Full-Autonomous-Blitz (FAB) is a Fully Autonomous Below The Surf Zone logistics Autonomous Underwater Ground Vehicle (AUGV) integrated system proposed by Greensea. The Department of Defense requires a material transport system that can autonomously deploy offshore, remain underwater for months, and emerge on command from the Very Shallow Water (VSW) and heavy Surf Zone (SZ) regions and navigate onto and beyond the CLZ. Such an asset would enable timing and routing flexibility in an otherwise very restricted environment. It would eliminate on-beach traffic congestion and provide an element of surprise that surface-based systems cannot offer. The deck space of an autonomous landing crafting is precious. The transport system should not require gantries or mechanisms that take up power, space or require complex controls. Drive off in-stride delivery improves utility and improves reliability. A tracked Amphibious Unmanned Ground Vehicle (AUGV) satisfies all needs; they consume almost no power while station-keeping, avoid detection, and even improve survivability in an active fire fight . A ship to shore transport system should solve the last mile problem by meeting the following operational requirements. Operate in Sea State 3+ conditions Maintain clandestine (low acoustic or visual signature) presence Remain in wait, submerged, until needed (cache and loiter) Traverse underwater, surf, and land environments, including marshes, rivers, and intertidal zones Deploy unassisted from autonomous unmanned craft Transport significant volumes and weights (1 ton) AUGVs represent a new class of vehicle. Greensea’s AUGVs enable missions in environments that previously needed to be avoided. The Surf Zone in particular exhibits unique challenges; due to its kinetic violence and constantly changing hydrographic and terrain, communications blackout in both RF and acoustics, and EO blind conditions render most sensors useless and make vehicle control challenging at best. Greensea’s intelligent approach proposes leveraging the proven Bayonet AUGV product line, combined with a proven autonomy and communications architecture, to provide a unique solution in the logistics transport of supplies in amphibious operations. The combination of Greensea’s inertial navigation technology for GPS-denied environments, SafeC2 communications architecture for enabling seafloor-to-over-the-horizon command and control, submersible vehicle autonomy with obstacle avoidance, and the Bayonet AUGV Crawler is unique in the world and a proven solution adopted by other groups within the US DoD.
