Research abstract

Fibertek proposes to develop and mature systems requirements and technology to support an ultra-low latency, all optical relay around an in-plane constellation of LEO satellites. The Phase 1 effort developed an optical backbone signal propagation model and defined the optical performance required to support a global 10-channel all-optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) system. We also designed and experimentally verified the high gain / low noise figure Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) performance required for an all-optical relay (AOR) capability. We were successful in maturing the highest risk sub-system required for the realization of an optical relay. The Phase I program demonstrated the feasibility for a successful, low-risk, Phase II program. During the Phase II program, Fibertek will mature, build, and environmentally test a TRL 6 engineering model of an all-optical relay suitable for a space flight technology demonstration. The AOR program deliverable is an optical com subsystem that can be incorporated into a LEO optical communications terminal. The delivered AOR will support a space flight technology demonstration. This Phase II SBIR proposes to develop the 2 key technologies required for a low earth orbit (LEO) mesh networks capability, an all-optical relay amplifier and a reconfigurable add/drop multiplexer (ROADM).
