Research abstract
To address the Air Force’s need for a software solution for optimizing the packing time and space of containers and pallets (ISU-90s, 463Ls, and custom tire racks) for deployment of Readiness Spares Packages (RSPs), Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop a new Agile Package Optimization and Load Planning Software for Readiness Spares (A-PACKS) based on a heuristic, guided, multi-objective, optimization and client-server software architecture. Specifically, the innovation in the heuristic, guided, multi-objective, optimization and client-server software architecture will enable A-PACKS to optimize the packing time and space utilization of containers and pallets for deployment of RSPs in a short time (3 days from notification). With its user-friendly What-You-See-is-What-You-Pack (WYSWYP) interface, automated data retrieval, consideration of maintenance priorities, weight balancing, and emphasis on safety, A-PACKS ensures optimal package distribution. By leveraging A-PACKS, the Air Force can streamline packing and loading operations, ultimately leading to more efficient and effective mission support. In Phase I, we will determine the scientific and technical merit of A-PACKS and demonstrate its feasibility. This will be achieved by first developing operational scenarios and use cases, and defining operating parameters (inputs, outputs, and operating conditions). Then we will develop the A-PACKS software architecture, including its features and functionalities, and implement optimization algorithms. We will also develop a plan for testing and validating the A-PACKS software, including testing methodology, evaluation metrics, timeline, and resource requirements. The key components of A-PACKS, including optimization algorithms and user interface, will be integrated into a Phase I prototype system, which will be used to demonstrate the capabilities and feasibility of A-PACKS. The Phase II development plan will be based on Phase I results. In Phase II, Intellisense plans to build on Phase I results to develop prototyping expectations, including operating parameters, testing requirements, and success criteria, and develop a well-defined deliverable prototype for optimizing the packing time and maximum utilization of space for RSP deployment.
