Research abstract

We propose using eye-safe infrared lasers to wirelessly transfer power to small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) during flight, extending their operational time. By converting laser light into electrical power with a thermophotovoltaic cell on the drone, the need for frequent battery swaps is significantly reduced, enhancing mission effectiveness and personnel safety. The advancement of this technology can stimulate progress in the broader fields of directed energy and photovoltaics, paving the way for increased use of autonomous systems and renewable energy solutions.
