Research abstract

Polycrystalline perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are an exciting technology that offers the opportunity to move beyond silicon and meet the pressing need for lightweight solar modules at both a power-on-the-move soldier-level and in large permanent installations. PSCs are quickly catching up with silicon in overall power conversion efficiency (PCE), with certified PCEs of small area lab cells exceeding 26% for single junction PSCs and 33% for perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells. PSCs are already superior to silicon with inherently flexible structures and lower overall costs due to relative savings in raw materials and fabrication processing. In this proposal, Perotech with its academic collaborator propose to meet the Army’s technology needs by further developing our industry-leading structure stacked devices. The novel modules structure will not only enhance energy yield but also outdoor stability of the perovskite modules. A holistic solution is provided to meet the upscaling, stability, and efficiency goals. Work performed during the proposal period will support development of manufacturing practices for highly efficient and environmentally stable bifacial modules on the industrially relevant scales essential to realize the advantages of PSCs, thereby enabling PSC availability to provide energy for the Army’s mission-critical applications under non-ideal conditions.
