Research abstract

BRM will weave and supply material to Sandia National Laboratory forĀcharacterization asĀ3D orthogonal reinforcement for futureĀnose tip TPS applications. BRM will supply two different unit cell constructions, the 336-unit cell from the Phase I effort and a new 666-unit cell being proposed as a potential nose tip TPS.Ā Collins / Raytheon will be subcontracted to turn the woven reinforcement into carbon-carbon via a combination ofĀCVI and pitch densification.Ā Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) has experience with nose tip applications and will characterize the carbon-carbon material.Ā BRM will also supply Sandia National Labs with additional dry reinforcement for theĀredesign of theĀsounding rocket leading edges (continuation of the Phase I work). SNL shall model the composite for fligtĀtest, including aerothermal and ablation.ĀIf the Sandia National LabsĀintegration team selects BRM's woven TPS solution, the reinforcement shall be infused with a matrix,Āmachined into leading edges, and integrated onto a flight vehicle with instrumentation.Ā Ā
