Research abstract

While monitoring and safety has significantly improved during dive training, at locations such as the Combat Diver Qualification Course (CDQC), student divers still encounter serious injuries and fatalities during these often grueling training programs. Therefore, rugged, comfortable and reliable physiological monitoring systems are required to alert student divers and nearby instructors and fellow students to predetermined levels of risk. To address this key market gap, Human Systems Integration, Inc. (HSI) (Walpole, MA), a leading developer of garment-embedded, wearable electronics products and solutions, proposes a disruptive, garment-based wearable platform that will non-invasively monitor and objectively measure the physiological status of student divers and will provide a real-time assessment of diver health and safety. This garment-based, Tactical Diver Instrumented Vital-Signs Emitter (TacDIVE) platform will integrate the requisite sensor suite to alert against predetermined levels of risk. A distinguishing element of this proposal is that HSI has already worked with an Air Force customer to productize a diver monitoring system that has been successfully tested at several DoD dive training facilities. This existing Gen 1, TRL 6 solution serves as a great starting point for the development of the TacDIVE diver health and safety monitoring system that can be matured to a capable and fieldable solution by the end of a Phase II program. During our Phase I Feasibility Study, we developed a very novel and modular platform approach to realizing our next generation TacDIVE system that will provide the Army and the DoD a unique and disruptive DPMS solution that can be deployed across pool training, open water training and tactical operations and missions.
