Research abstract

To build on top of the existing feasibility studies performed for Vardaĺs first reentry mission with a commercial bus, this proposal includes a new Varda developed high production and high delta-V bus and the development of a HITL simulator for on-orbit repositioning, re-entry and landing capabilities. The development of innovative guidance, navigation and control methodologies that includes a six degree of freedom (6-DOF) simulation that will be integrated with a software test infrastructure and hardware, enabling the transition from terrestrial infrastructure to space systems.áThis will also unlock the capability to eventually demonstrate hardware and software modularity for future bus and payload integration development. á This technical proposal aim will have the following objectives: Develop a 6-DOF guidance, navigation and control simulation package for use for rapid repositioning, re-entry, and landing validation, including with an object like a re-entry capsule. This will provide the Space Force with a simulation package that can be used to simulate all portions of spaceflight. Integrate the 6-DOF GNC simulator to HITL. This is commonly used in the development and testing of complex real-time embedded systems. Design and implement software and IT infrastructure and backend to integrate stand-alone GNC simulation with hardware and future vehicle avionics. Define, design and implement test cases for to demonstrate sizing capability for various spacecraft bus trades for targeting accuracy and repositioning capabilities. Demonstrate of a new Varda satellite bus that has been designed for high production, high delta-V, and thrust á The development of a 6-DOF simulation enables rapid prototyping capability where mission design parameters and spacecraft configuration (including sensors and actuators) can be easily changed to assess TacRS mission requirements objectives. á Once the GNC simulation is complete, the simulation standalone software will be integrated with hardware-in-the-loop capability. This allows for real-time hardware to run the simulation component of the environmental physics and flight vehicle, eventually integrating flight-like real-time processors (flight hardware) running flight software in the loop as well.
