Research abstract

The original objective for this topic was, “Develop a software solution for operating mobile tablets in multi-level secured, disjointed mission environments to aid in the establishment of a common Electronic Kneeboard (EKB) capability across all United States Naval (USN) and United States Marine Corps (USMC) aviation platforms.” Space Sciences Corporation (SSC) offered a unique solution based on fundamental computer science principles of communicating sequential processes (CSP).   The basic concept was to reduce the problem space (applications running in a specific environment) to its lowest level components (behaviors), and then formally define these components and their interactions so that the overall system behavior could be verified (formal proof). The concept was considered completely out-of-the-box, but if doable offered considerable improvements to on-going EKB information assurance (IA) capability.   Award of a phase II contract, with multiple gated options, went to SSC because the technical innovation was considered high risk; however, the concept was successful and has a very high potential return on investment. The present objective for a mobile 5G UAV cross-domain cyberdefense solution will likely require multiple deliveries resulting from test, review, and revision cycles necessary to meet transition maturity goals.
