Research abstract

Real-time tracking of materials, in transit visibility with automated scanning and lowering delivery times in the operations of an enterprise has shown tremendous value in the private and public sector. The Department of Defense has invested in several disparate systems to gain visibility and security in operations. However, even these islands of technology are using approaches that are rapidly becoming outdated. Specifically, passive UHF RFID which has largely been used for low-cost labeling of commodities, reading them at short ranges with very expensive infrastructure, and active RFID (battery powered beacons) which have been used for longer range tracking of larger assets and rolling stock. These traditional methods are rapidly being obsoleted with a new concept that combines the best of both worlds - passive millimeter wave RFID or 5G edge tagging and smart handheld devices as readers.
