Research abstract

Intelligent Optical Systems, Inc. (IOS) is proposing to develop a Radiation-Tolerant Multi-Channel Transceiver with Automated Redundancy (RMAR) module to meet the NavyÆs need for a fiber-optic communication device that can be operated in extremely harsh radiation environments. This module is hermetically sealed and uses radiation hardened ("rad-hard") microelectronic components in non-rad-hard equivalent designs, with variations in the materials and manufacturing processes for radiation mitigation. The RMAR module also uses rad-hard optical fiber, achieving radiation mitigation through use of dopants in the optical fiber. Further enhanced radiation mitigation is achieved by automated redundancy measures implemented in both transmittal code and microelectronic elements. In Phase I we will generate and assess an initial design for the RMAR module as a 4-fiber transceiver with two receiver channels and two transmitter channels.
