Research abstract

The change to Distributed Operations (DO) within the Marine Corps has exposed the need for a single platform, Remote Expeditionary Autonomous Pioneer system (REAPr) to support small, dispersed fighting units across a large area to create a tactical advantage through separate but coordinated actions.  During Phase I of this effort, GS Engineering developed and proven the feasibility of a robotic platform to provide this capability, and tested the capability through a simulated environment. Using a full Model-Based Systems Engineering approach and a modular architecture, GS Engineering developed a modular platform for performing a wide range of material handling, transport, and utility tasks.  During Phase II, the Phase I conceptual design will be matured, resulting in a fully detailed CREO CAD model used to produce a physical prototype for testing and demonstration.  In parallel with the physical design, the framework for the simulation platform developed in phase I will be used to integrate RTK and WMI for autonomy, enabling development of the autonomy platform to occur prior to the production of a physical prototype, reducing program risk and accelerating development. Following production, the prototype will be tested and demonstrated through a series of example tasks in a variety of terrains and conditions.  Phase II will result in a tele-op capable REAPr platform that is ready for soldier testing, and future development to integrate autonomous capabilities.
