Research abstract

To develop a real-time cybersecurity solution that does not adversely affect military vehicle operation while providing robust security, Global Technology Connection, Inc and The Univerisity of Michigan are proposing to utilize an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) fingerprinting technique that not only validates in-vehicle messages but also identifies any malicious ECUs on the network. Preliminary tests on commercial automobiles have demonstrated 100% detection and a near-zero false positive rate. During Phase I, these algorithms will be further optimized using modeling and simulation approaches and on a CAN bus prototype. Our hardware/software solution not only detects anomalous messages but also conducts root cause analysis to identify the source of such messages. We utilize very computationally efficient algorithms that process incoming messages without affecting bus loads, or memory or computational resources of ECUs. The inherent nature of the solution and its implementation ensure that it will not impact, nor delay, nor degrade, nor create false positives on the systems, sensors, computing and network resources of safety-critical vehicular systems as required in the solicitation. For the Phase II of this program, we plan to partner with a vehicle integrator to perform independent penetration testing and on real vehicles that allows for a rapid technology transition and commercialization.
