Research abstract

A multiplexed, shelf-stable, and intuitive detection system is urgently needed to mitigate the significant risks faced by expeditionary forces, particularly U.S. troops deployed in regions with substandard food sanitation. The consumption of local food and water, which often harbor pathogens, poses a direct threat to the well-being of warfighters. Alarming rates of diarrhea have been reported among military personnel deployed in these areas. Current methods for detecting pathogenic contamination in food and water are burdensome, time-consuming, and require specialized expertise and equipment. CFD Research recognizes this pressing need and aims to enhance our RAPID-ID multiplexed in-vitro diagnostic platform. Our innovative system offers a swift, user-friendly, and portable solution that can rapidly assess the safety of food and water without relying on complex laboratory procedures. Notably, the RAPID-ID system is designed to be shelf-stable, independent of external power sources, and easily interpreted visually. Our portable technology can significantly bolster the defense against both accidental and intentional contamination, ensuring the welfare of warfighters in diverse operational environments.
