Research abstract

Phase I of the project practically demonstrated the technology of the key subsystem capabilities required to complete inspection, analysis, reporting, and repair visualization. Phase II of the project, which will require the base year and two option years, will develop, build, and test a full system prototype. The base year will focus primarily on procuring an inspection subsystem. The end of Phase I resulted in two inspection system alternatives: the Leica T-Scan and DSP. To select between these two, the team will verify the DSP’s capability on the CVN. The end of Phase I also determined the projection technology was appropriate for local contour deviation visualization onto the CVN. The equipment for the prototype rig will be procured, assembled, and calibrated in Phase II. The acquisition of the inspection system and the repair visualization rig will complete the major hardware purchases for the system prototype. The technical challenge of projecting edge deviations onto a blade with significantly shorter blade section widths will be solved.  The UI module designs will be completed, allowing system integration to commence. Phase II (option 1) will focus primarily on completing all software development. Phase II – Option 1 will implement the outlined modules for analysis and report generation. We will develop repair visualization software that matches the projection scene specifications defined in Phase I. Once all hardware and software components of the system are complete, they can be integrated with their corresponding User Interface modules. The result is a prototype integrated Propeller Geometric Certification System. Phase II (Option 2) will focus on field testing the integrated system prototype to ensure the system is working smoothly. The testing period will help the team collect feedback and adjust the system design and operation to accommodate real-world usage constraints. The completed system will aid in repairs and after its completion can be compared relative to traditional gages for cost and time savings to build potential customer and stakeholder confidence. Finally, PTI will develop the applicable technical manuals for the Navy to include in relevant specifications. These documents are required to facilitate Navy authorization to use the system.
