Research abstract

Robust, reliable, high flux x-ray sources have been long sought for a variety of applications including for sources capable of replacing radioisotope source-based irradiators in a range of applications. Stable operation under challenging environmental conditions, including varying temperatures, long term storage, intermittent power, and power surges is required. Rivis, Inc is developing an x-ray source based upon a new rugged high current cathode that overcomes historical barriers. It does not use low work function materials which are susceptible to trace gaseous impurities and to back-ion bombardment, does not require ultrahigh vacuum, and is not impacted by vibration, temperature changes or intermittent power. Its use as a cathode in an x-ray tube provides a robust, reliable x-ray source for use in resource limited environments. As a result of earlier experiments among the highest reported electron beam currents was demonstrated. Both high current per pulse and high average current have been demonstrated. Both broad area beams for x-rays production or focused beams using either electrostatic and magnetic focusing to produce an electron gun for injection into an accelerator are possible. In Phase I specific features of the source for high x-ray flux generation will be further refined to optimize the performance. The materials selection for optimum cathode and x-ray performance will be evaluated.High current cathodes are essential components for x-ray tubes or linear accelerators. X-ray sources may replace radioisotope source-based irradiators in a wide range of applications including medical treatment, cargo screening, and materials processing. The productivity is directly related to the x-ray flux in many industrial applications. High current cathodes increase x-ray flux and productivity.
