Research abstract

During the PhaseĀI effort, Corvid conducted numerical research to investigate the onset of instability when a high-velocity penetrator traverses a solid target. We modeled penetrator trajectory within the target as a function of impact velocity and various additional parameters using Velodyne, CorvidÆs native Lagrangian multi-physics simulation code.Ā For the Phase II effort, Corvid proposes to extend the work performed in Phase I to include analysis of fuze survivability and payload effectiveness against additional relevant target materials and configurations. Corvid will utilize the simulation methodology developed during the Phase I effort to enable the rapid, high resolution, classified effectiveness evaluations for actual penetrator designs against multi-material target configurations, allowing stakeholders to determine how to optimize performance within the required design space for the CPS weapons system. This analysis will support prototype selection and experimental design for a ballistic test campaign.Ā In addition to the simulation and analysis campaign, Corvid proposes to conduct an experimental test campaign to validate both the analysis tools and methodologies as well as the physical performance of one or more scaled point design concepts.Ā These tests are envisioned to involve the launch of scaled penetrator concepts from a large-caliber gun through representative target arrays.Ā Corvid will use the data from this test campaign to validate modeling and simulation methodologies and help provide design limits for fuze components and projectile body configurations. In the Option Period, Corvid will use test campaign data to develop design improvements to the projectile concepts.Ā In addition, we will leverage the validated modeling and simulation techniques to conduct system-level weapons effectiveness simulations to evaluate the warhead performance in the post-penetration state.Ā We will conduct these analyses for tactical warhead configurations against operationally relevant target designs.
