Research abstract

The goal of this project is to develop hyper-portable battery-powered dual-use (Radiography and Fluoroscopy) X-ray imaging capabilities for diagnosis and treatment of Trauma injuries for modern warfighter in battlefield and civilian scenarios.  Turner Innovations, Orem, Utah, has patented and developed the Smart-C, the world’s first portable battery-powered 16 lb. mini C-arm that is hand positionable and carried.  As shown during Phase I the system is unparalleled in its ability to perform image for extremity surgeries in forward environments.  Utilizing many of the core miniaturization and X-ray source technologies a larger, more powerful, full body imaging system prototype will be developed.  The alpha prototype will provide higher X-ray power (>100kV, >1 mA) and a larger imaging area (>20cm x 20cm) while still providing many of the revolutionary features of the Smart-C being: smaller, lighter, collapsible, energy-efficient, battery powered, flexible, wireless, and easy to use.   This dual-use medical X-ray imaging equipment will reduce lift requirements and provide improved trauma treatment closer to the point of injury/care.  Working in collaboration with Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) (as the customer) and Special Operations Command Medical Integration and Development (SOCMID) (as end-user) real world feedback will be provided early and continuously during the 12 month performance period; ensuring the end product technical requirements meets the Air Force operational needs.
