Research abstract

This project investigates an innovative modular steel bridge deck system of a “sandwich” design for achieving the necessary stiffness in orthogonal directions employing two steel plates separated by a steel stiffening core.Such a layered composite deck could become an ideal solution for the next generation of bridge applications. With the appropriate choice of the core profile, the transverse shear stiffness can also be increased, eliminating the need for discrete transverse stiffeners in the deck system.Depending on the span, the depth of the deck could easily be adjusted by varying the core depth and properties, along with varying the top and bottom plate characteristics. It is envisioned that this Phase I project would analyze potential structural solutions for the U.S. bridge market, and provide a cost-effective, lightweight, modular deck system as an alternative to the current systems utilized in conventional bridge construction. The Phase I project will evaluate potential steel components, analyze and optimize configurations, fabrication considerations, installation details and issues, construction cost considerations, and market assessment for commercialization.
