Research abstract

Imperia Batteries, a division of Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI), proposes to develop and demonstrate a process to reduce the cost of the Hammerhead energy storage system while meeting the functional, performance and form factor requirements. In this process, the separator will be directly applied as a coating to the surface of a battery electrode. The key advantages of the directly applied separator (DAS) process are a reduction in manufacturing cost, increased manufacturing flexibility, and improved manufacturing yield, electrochemical, and safety performance. The DAS process will be developed in partnership with Optodot Corporation, employing their expertise in ceramic separator technology. The deliverable cells will also employ Imperia’s proprietary high active (HA) coated materials and nonflammable electrolyte. Collectively, these technologies improve energy density and safety while reducing production cost.  Imperia will demonstrate the DAS manfaucturing process by constructing large format Li-ion cells for the Hammerhead system. Imperia will support qualifying the DAS concept through rigorous performance and safety testing (‘S9310-AQ-SAF-010 at cell and battery level) in cells designed for the targeted applciation. Imperia will quantify the reduction in the cost of the Hammerhead energy storage system that can be realized by employing the DAS process.
