Research abstract
The introduction of space-based missile defense sensors and communications systems has resulted in a need by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to connect this ōspace layerö with existing interceptor systems, such as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor system. Presently, THAAD operates in conjunction with the AN/TPY-2 transportable radar system, which provides THAAD guidance data over X-band communications links. The space layer operates in the Ka-band, resulting in a capability gap for interfacing THAAD with the new space-layer based systems. Retrofitting THAAD to replace the X-band system with a native Ka-band transponder could drive significant costs and impact missile readiness, therefore a novel solution is required to passively modify THAAD for space-layer connectivity. Our proposed solution, A Captive Carry Transponder for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Interceptor, provides a method for connecting THAAD to the Ka-band based space layer using a passive, captive carry architecture. Through the use of a novel antenna and transponder configuration, using high reliability, long-life battery cells, in combination with a low-profile aerodynamic enclosure ¢ our solution creates a bridge between the space layer Ka-band communications and the THAADÆs existing X-band transmitters and receivers, without internal modification to the interceptor or a need for lengthy downtime associated with the captive carry systemÆs installation. During Phase I of this effort, we will assess the feasibility of our captive carry system to connect THAAD to the Ka-band space layer, while preserving connectivity to X-band ground assets, through requirements definition, subsystem trade studies, and integrated analyses to develop a preliminary design for the captive carry system which meet all of the MDAÆs requirements for communications links, stand-by life, and minimization of impacts to THAAD flight dynamics. By the conclusion of Phase I we will have developed a preliminary design concept which is ready for initial prototyping and testing efforts in a follow-on Phase II study.
