Research abstract

The objective of Phase II is to develop the AM process investigated in Phase I to fabricate optical components. The resulting optical components will be evaluated in terms of geometrical, mechanical, microstructural and optical properties to validate the effectiveness of the developed process. The objectives of the Phase II Base are to: 1. Naval optical component design, selection of material tailored to AM, and AM processing parameters selection 2. Fabricate optical components with full densification 3. Characterize geometry and surface quality of the resulting optics 4. Characterize the mechanical, microstructural and optical properties of the produced optics. 5. Develop glass AM machine design requirements set. The objectives of the Phase II Option are to: 1. Develop the wire-fed glass AM prototype machine 2. Repair of damaged optics, including repair strategies and repair case studies.
