Research abstract

In response to the Navy’s need for an ultra-lightweight electromagnetic interference/electromagnetic pulse shielding material for protecting sensitive electronics/avionics, Triton Systems proposes to develop a conformable graphene-based nanostructured composite material capable of 70 dB shielding effectiveness across the frequency range from 500 MHz to 100 GHz. The proposed shielding material will have an electrical conductivity of at least 3000S/cm and a weight of 10% that of an equivalent performance aluminum shield. The selected graphene-based nanocomposite fabrication process is readily scalable and suitable for producing large area articles at low manufacturing cost. During Phase I, Triton will design, build and test the nanocomposite shielding material systems to meet the performance requirements stated above. We will develop and optimize nanocomposite shielding materials and fabrication methods using laboratory test samples. Triton will fabricate shielding materials of at least 6” x 6” in size and validate shielding performances across the frequency ranges from 500 MHz to 100 GHz by an independent test laboratory. In Phase I Option, we will further optimize shielding material structures and fabrication procedures, including effective electrical contacts and ground planes.  In Phase II, Triton will demonstrate and validate the shielding performance of a three-dimensional enclosure prototype of dimensions of 12” x 24” x 6”. Reliability testing of the prototype enclosure will be done in accordance with MIL-STD 810 and other required Standards.
