Research abstract

Atea Technologies (Atea), in collaboration with Corvid Technologies (Corvid), will design a welding pre-heater to overcome the persistent challenges encountered in the Navyís shipyards, including inconsistent preheat application, equipment reliability issues, and inefficiencies in setup and operation. Ateaís weld pre-heating system will be more reliable and long-lasting than current solutions, while also delivering numerous usability improvements such as faster setup, intuitive controls, and better integration into existing welding workflows. Atea staff will utilize their deep expertise in heater design and thermal engineering, combined with proven experience in the development of ruggedized electronic systems, to deliver a robust prototype capable of operating in demanding shipyard environments. The system will incorporate adaptive thermal control and real-time monitoring to ensure precise and consistent heat application across various metal substrates and weld geometries. Testing will be carried out to show conformance with Navy requirements and to validate the success of key design goals, including durability, and thermal control. Ultimately, the project will demonstrate a solution that reduces failed heaters, improves usability, and supports higher throughput in naval shipbuilding and repair operations.
