Research abstract

This proposal addresses the challenge of efficiently measuring the distribution of subsurface hydrogeologic properties to characterize and manage groundwater contamination, geotechnical risk, and water resources. We will develop and commercialize a robust and flexible system allowing high-value NMR logging measurements to be acquired by drilling operators, with measurement performed during retraction of drill rods. The technology will include tooling supporting integration with various drilling methods widely used in environmental remediation, geotechnical engineering, and water resource markets. It is recognized that commercial success of the product requires a system design that is low-cost and easy-to-operate so that a non-technical drill operator can reliably deliver high-quality data. The R&D efforts of the program will focus on advancements in system performance, system ruggedness, and sophisticated backend automation allow for straightforward efficient operation. The Phase IIB tasks build upon success of the Phase I and Phase II programs, which were focused on high-risk development of core technical elements and experimental measurement protocols. In the first major Phase IIB task, we will develop NMR hardware and software components that are optimized for the intended user and market. In the second major task, we will develop tooling components that are physically robust for reliable performance and minimal downtime in the high-impact setting of a drilling operation. In the final major task, we will perform wide-scale demonstrations of the technology to drive commercialization and further stimulate market demand. In line with the purpose of Phase IIB funding, this project will accelerate commercialization of NMR technology through the introduction of a new product for wide market use. The proposed technology will be of immediate commercial value in environmental remediation, geotechnical engineering, and water resources markets. Wider and lower-cost availability of NMR logging will allow site engineers and managers to more successful manage subsurface risk and improve project outcomes, ultimately leading to a cleaner environment, safer engineering, and better protected natural resources.
