Research abstract

Spectral Sciences, Inc. proposes to develop a framework for linking high-fidelity multiphase flow simulations and peridynamic solid simulations through automated mapping of results between the models. This effort will include the incorporation of a novel multiphase numerical method, capable of simulating shock induced aerobreakup, and a material response algorithm for modeling the deformation and fracture of vehicle surfaces for the purpose of simulating rain-induced damage on hypersonic flight vehicles. This effort will leverage SSIís extensive experience with aerothermal modeling of hypersonic vehicles with US3D with extensions. Phase I will develop and demonstrate the coupling between the multiphase extension of US3D and the peridynamic solver for the deformable vehicle surface. Phase II will develop the full prototype mapping between the two simulations and improve the efficiency of the simulation framework with multiresolution mesh capabilities. This effort will improve the simulation capabilities for modeling rain-induced damage on realistic hypersonic vehicle geometries.ÝÝ
