Research abstract
To address the Navyís need for high-speed, ruggedized digital data links capable of exceeding 100 Gbps per fiber through legacy multimode optical infrastructure in military aircraft, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop an innovative Modal Dispersion Management (MDM) system. This system leverages optical angular momentum multiplexing and short-wavelength division multiplexing to enable data rates of up to 200 Gbps per multimode fiber using existing 10 Gbps vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser transmitters, dramatically enhancing bandwidth while preserving investment in legacy hardware. The innovation in Intellisenseís proprietary modal dispersion mitigation techniques reduces signal degradation due to environmental factors such as temperature and vibration. The MDM solution is designed for seamless integration into aircraft systems using military-qualified components, minimizing system qualification burden and enabling rapid field deployment. In Phase I, Intellisense will develop and demonstrate the feasibility of the MDM system by designing the system architecture and the data link to function over temperature and develop and demonstrate the feasibility of a 4 ◊ 100 Gbps solution that is hardened to meet the environmental requirements for military aircraft. We will also evaluate system integration requirements and characterize the potential for scaling to higher data rates. The Phase I Option, if exercised, will include environmental testing and preliminary prototype plans to be developed under Phase II. In Phase II, Intellisense will develop and deliver six transceivers. We will test two packaged transceivers and use these transceivers to demonstrate acceptable performance over the full range of thermal shock and vibration.
