Research abstract

To address the Navy's need for a new fiber optic multiplexer/demultiplexer for 100 Gbps and higher digital optical communication systems, DSTAR Communications proposes developing a novel Multimode Bragg Grating Multiplexer (MBG MUX). This technology enables Short Wavelength Division Multiplexing (SWDM) for key elements of the optical backbone in military core avionics. The MBG design targets integration with 50-micrometer core multimode fiber subassemblies, supporting optical transmission rates exceeding 100 Gbps. The innovative all-solid-state MBG design ensures reliable operation across -40∞C - +95∞C temperature range and occupies less than 1 cubic centimeter of volume. Due to its compatibility with established, industry-standard fiber optic subassemblies, cost-effective MBG solutions can be seamlessly integrated into transmitters and receivers, as well as fiber optic test equipment for troubleshooting future optical networks. In Phase I, DSTAR will demonstrate the feasibility of MBG MUX through modeling, development, and testing of MBG concepts to meet the Navy's requirements for airborne platforms. The Phase I option focuses on alpha prototype demonstration of MBG to define specifications for technology implementation in the Phase II effort. In Phase II, DSTAR plans to fabricate beta MBG prototypes and test them with transponder and test equipment subassemblies across the full temperature range.
