Research abstract

Triton Systems will demonstrate an innovative method for propelling missiles out of a Vertical Launch System (VLS) without using the first stage rocket. This will enable the energy in the first stage rocket to be used exclusively for trajectory propulsion, thereby increasing its range. A successful cold-launch system must deliver a 10,000 lb. missile to a minimum height of 100 feet. Such a missile may be as large as 30” in diameter, which is larger than the capacity of existing fielded VLS technology. The proposed system is a future capability that will enable larger missiles to be deployed on next-generation Navy ships to counter emerging threats.
