Research abstract
The Active Noise Cancelling Boom Microphone project aims to develop an improved voice communication system for military aircrew operating in high-noise environments. The solution will address the limitations of legacy boom microphones by reducing transmitted ambient noise without degrading speech intelligibility, ultimately improving communication clarity and reducing at-ear noise exposure for aviators. DEM Manufacturingís approach focuses on integrating modern microphone technologies and adaptive signal processing into a rugged, lightweight boom assembly compatible with legacy aviation helmets and communication systems.ÝThis technical effort will include benchmarking of legacy and commercial microphone elements, prototype boom design, and development of real-time digital signal processing algorithms tailored for aircraft acoustic profiles. Mechanical integration, environmental performance, and power compatibility will be evaluated to ensure the system can operate across a range of legacy and modern aircraft intercom systems. The project will leverage DEMís experience in ruggedized communications systems and wearable electronics to deliver a solution that meets operational and environmental requirements for military aviation use.
