Research abstract

Imaging systems are pivotal in diverse sectors such as healthcare, scientific research, manufacturing, and defense. The precision of information extracted from images is critical. However, the performance of these systems is often hindered by the limitations of optical and mechanical components, as well as the physical processes involved in image capture. A significant R&D challenge is to accurately gauge an imaging system’s true performance and devise image processing techniques that bolster the reliability of the information obtained. We will develop a commercial product that will, firstly, enable precise calibration of high-performance imaging systems, and secondly, refine image processing to correct imperfections and reveal a “true” image of the object under investigation. Our end goal is a product equipped with calibration standard and specialized data reconstruction software that surpasses all current methods, including the slant-edge technique outlined in ISO 12233. This innovation aims to substantially enhance the resolution capabilities of virtually any imaging system. In the initial phase, we have created a calibration standard with a consistent power spectral density (PSD) and an algorithm for optical image contrast enhancement to prove the viability of our method. Next, we will extent the application range to fluorescence, electric and magnetic contrast imagers.
