Research abstract

The NavyÆs AN/SPS-73(V)18 Next Generation Surface Search Radar (NGSSR) system simultaneously supports the primary missions of surface search, precision radar navigation, and periscope detection and discrimination (PDD). The NGSSR system achieves these multiple missions through the uses of programmable waveform modes, waveform design and scheduling, and software programmability that take advantage of various modern radar technologies. For this Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II effort, The Probitas Project, Inc. and our teammate, Metron, Inc., leverage the NGSSRÆs software-defined features to provide an improved target classification capability to eliminate the need for PDD human operator intervention and provide new approaches to optimize waveform and receive processing to maximize radar performance, adapt to the environment, and minimize spectrum interference.
