Research abstract

With the rise of the Pacific Rim economies, as well as the shifting global military tactics and strategies, it has become clear that rapid assessment of hypersonic enabling technologies is of relevance to the United States Armed Forces. The development, testing, screening of advanced materials for hypersonic vehicles is critical to attaining hypersonic flight for our Nation. Specifically, development of an efficient high throughput system to rapidly measure hypersonic material surface pressure, stress, and temperature under realistic hypersonic flight conditions (eg high Mach #, high shear, high temperature) is needed. A “test early, test often” approach such as this would allow material engineers and hypersonic vehicle designers faster turnaround in the development and implementation of these niche materials. In response to the DoD Navy SBIR Phase topic N202-137, “Sensor Embedding Procedures in Candidate Hypersonic Material Specimens”, the Innoveering team is proposing its innovative Rapid Advanced Process for Interrogating and Diagnosing (RAPID) hypersonic material specimens using novel non-intrusive advanced sensing and diagnostics methodologies developed by our team. Our Ph I approach will implement a multi-pronged effort that combines analysis, design and target risk reduction activities such as component level testing, to advance our RAPID concept in Ph I, meeting all DoD requirements. We will leverage our experience in hypersonic materials test and evaluation, advanced diagnostics, harsh environment sensors and embedding sensors into CCC.
